Magica
Concept art, game asset creation, spine animation
Magica is a game concept done with in a group of 5 artists. Magica is a 2.5D action adventure game where you play as one of the three magical girls to explore and unlock the secrets of the town.
In the project, I was responsible for some concept art, some illustrations, some animating, set dressing, lighting, blueprinting, and recording footage in Unreal engine.

With the art direction given by our art director, Ong Ci Ning, we started creating the characters based off her proportions and artstyle.
The character I ideated on is Granny Orange, a previous generation magical girl who now acts as a mentor to the other two magical girls. Based around a warm orange-yellow palette, she is a mix of a classy and street lolita-magical girl aesthetic.
Initially, I contemplated on giving her a mobility scooter to ride on but due to time constraints, rigging difficulties, and overall being a hard idea to execute, the vehicle was eventually removed.

I rendered and separated the layers for Granny Orange and her umbrella. I also rendered the scooter which I later scraped due to gameplay and rigging difficulties.
I did the attack animation for Granny Orange. The rig is done by Ci Ning.
Aside from Granny Orange, I also rendered two other characters: the minion enemy and the Beach Cleaner. The minion is separated into parts and rigged by me. While rigging, I experimented constraints to create a 2.5D effect with the head and the body and chain constraints for the chains. I also did the hurt animation for the minion. The frame by frame splash is done by Ci Ning.
The beach cleaner is not separated in parts and has a very simple two frame animation as she is an NPC.

Alongside my other responsibilities, I also used did lighting, set-dressing, and integration of the assets in Unreal engine. Using paper ZD plug-in for Unreal and other blueprints, I integrated the 2D characters and objects into a few different environments shown in our game trailer and prototype. Here are some screenshots of the environments in the game:
